APPENDIX: How Dangerous are Freed Guantanamo Prisoners?

article | June 05, 2014

As of June 5, 2014, 620 Guantanamo prisoners have been released or transferred abroad. Of those 620, we have identified 54 who are either confirmed to be or suspected of engaging in militant activities against either the U.S. or non-U.S. targets. We have placed them in the following categories:

**Category 1: GTMO detainees confirmed to be engaging in militant activities against U.S. targets.

TOTAL: 15, 2.4%

Category 2: GTMO detainees suspected of engaging in militant activities against U.S. targets

TOTAL: 21, 3.4%

Category 3: GTMO detainees confirmed to be engaging in militant activities against non-U.S. targets

TOTAL: 9, 1.2%

Category 4: GTMO detainees suspected of engaging in militant activities against non-U.S. targets

TOTAL: 9, 1.2%

GRAND TOTAL: 54, 8.7%**

NOTE: In cases where we could not independently verify the Pentagon's assessment of a named individual's confirmed or suspected involvement in any form of militant activity, we took the Pentagon's assessment at face value. The former detainees are grouped first according to their DoD status -- confirmed, suspected, not publicly listed -- and then listed chronologically by release date.
