Whether you’re Christmas shopping at the last minute or looking to ring in 2015 with a good book, New America’s got you covered with a cornucopia of amazing reads for this holiday season. Don’t just take our word for it. These titles from New America’s Fellows, alumni, and board members are earning “best of 2014” plaudits from an array of critics.

New America Board member Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End has been recognized as one of the Washington Post’s 10 best books of 2014 and one of the 100 most notable books of 2014 by the New York Times. The Chicago Tribune, NPR, The Guardian, Amazon, and GoodReads Choice Awards also recognized Being Mortal as one of the best books of the year.

Fellow Board member Francis Fukuyama’s Political Order and Political Decay: From the Industrial Revolution to the Globalization of Democracy was on the Washington Post’s list of the year’s 50 notable works of nonfiction, along with Breadwinning and Caregiving Fellow Brigid Schulte’s Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time and Schmidt Family Fellow Christopher Leonard’s The Meat Racket: The Secret Takeover of America’s Food Business. Overwhelmed also made NPR’s list of best-book staff picks, along with New America alum Gabriel Sherman’s The Loudest Voice in the Room.

New America alum Anand Gopal’s No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War Through Afghan Eyes was a National Book Award Finalist. Both Gopal’s book and Dana Goldstein’s The Teacher Wars: A History of America’s Most Embattled Profession were named New York Times 100 most notable books.

As 2014 draws to a close, we also celebrate the fact that this year, 9 current and former New America Fellows published books as a result of their time here: Anand Gopal, Shane Harris, Christopher Leonard, Megan McArdle, Evgeny Morozov, Dayo Olopade, Emily Parker, Brigid Schulte, and Gabriel Sherman. Two of those books—Overwhelmed by Brigid Schulte and The Loudest Voice in the Room by Gabriel Sherman—were New York Times bestsellers.

See you in 2015, book lovers. Happy New Year from everyone at New America.
